Switch off and recharge over the summer
Summer is almost upon us, it’s time to rest, recharge and make the most of the holidays. Taking some time to recharge is vital for both our physical and mental wellbeing.
Here’s a few reasons why it’s important to step away from the school work and enjoy your holidays.
To allow you to rest completely.
When you’re at school you’re constantly planning and thinking about what you need to do next, and, unless you’re very careful, this can spill over into the holidays. Your brain needs time to rest and switch off. You may need to give yourself permission to do this, but when you do you’ll soon appreciate getting a good night’s sleep; without waking up in the early hours with your to do list running through your head.
To reset your stress levels.
Teaching can be an incredibly demanding profession, this year more than ever; one way to de-stress your summer could be to dedicate some time to prepare for the new school year. Organising your workload and setting aside a few specific time slots for preparation can help you manage your time and reduce stress and worries about the autumn term. This scheduling of time for preparation will help you feel in control, whilst maintaining your work-life balance over the summer. Give your mind and body time to destress and you’ll find you do your job better when you return for the next term.
To reconnect with your family and friends.
Most teachers can feel constantly torn between work and family. The summer holiday is your chance to spend time with your family, and for your family to spend time with you – the relaxed and recharged you! You may have lots of friends who also teach and who understand the time constraints of your job. However, the summer offers you more time to connect and spend time together with friends without discussing work. So, meet up and have fun!
To be ready to return to school full of enthusiasm and energy.
Stepping away from your class, giving yourself the time to recharge, means you’ll return to the new term with a renewed level of enthusiasm. You’ll be ready to give the best version of you to your students and colleagues.
“Sometimes the best solution is to rest, relax and recharge. It’s hard to be your best on empty.” – Sam Glenn
Have a wonderful break and remember, you’re doing an incredible job, you’ve earned this time for you.
