Top Tips for Nailing Your Video and Phone Interviews

We know how nerve-wracking job interviews can be. Whether it’s your first or your fiftieth, we’ve got your back. Video and phone interviews have become the new norm, especially for temporary contractors, and with a few simple strategies, you can stand out and leave a lasting impression.

1. Test Your Tech Ahead of Time

One of the most common interview hiccups is technical issues. You don’t want to start your interview with a stressful “Can you hear me?” or “I think my camera’s frozen!” So, test everything in advance. Check your internet connection, camera, microphone, and any necessary software (Zoom, Skype, etc.). If possible, do a mock interview with a friend or family member to make sure everything runs smoothly.

2. Find a Quiet, Well-Lit Space

Where you sit during your interview matters. Find a quiet spot where you won’t be interrupted. A clutter-free, well-lit environment helps you look professional and ensures you’re seen clearly on camera. Avoid bright lights behind you, and opt for soft, natural light if you can.

3. Dress the Part – From Head to Toe

It’s tempting to just dress nicely from the waist up, but trust us – it’s worth putting on a full outfit. Dressing the part not only makes you look more professional, but it also gets you into the right mindset.

4. Prepare for the Usual Questions

Whether it’s a phone or video interview, be ready to answer the common questions: “Tell me about yourself,” “Why do you want to work here?” and “What are your strengths and weaknesses?” Practice your responses, but keep them natural. Don’t memorize a script—your answers should flow like a conversation. And remember, be specific! Give examples that showcase your experience and skills.

5. Keep the Conversation Engaging

Since video and phone interviews can feel a bit more distant than in-person chats, make an extra effort to keep the conversation engaging. Smile, make eye contact (as best as you can through the camera), and actively listen. If you’re on the phone, use your voice to convey enthusiasm—your tone will make a big difference in how engaged you sound.

6. Have Your Notes Ready

One of the advantages of a phone or video interview is that you can have notes in front of you. It’s perfectly fine to refer to your resume, job description, or a list of key points you want to cover. Just be sure to keep your notes organised and easily accessible.

7. Practice Your Body Language

Even though video interviews are virtual, your body language still matters. Sit up straight, lean in slightly to show engagement, and keep your movements calm and controlled. Avoid fidgeting or looking down at your phone or papers too often. On the phone, your body language still plays a role in how you come across—so stand tall, smile, and use gestures to help emphasise points (they’ll come through in your tone).

8. Be Ready for Technical Glitches

Technology isn’t perfect, and sometimes things go wrong. If your video freezes or you lose connection, don’t panic! Stay calm, and if possible, try to reconnect quickly. If that’s not an option, let the interviewer know right away that you’re having technical issues and ask if you can switch to a phone call or reschedule.

9. Ask Thoughtful Questions

At the end of the interview, you’ll usually be asked if you have any questions. This is your chance to shine! Asking thoughtful questions shows that you’ve done your homework and are genuinely interested in the role. Avoid asking questions that can be easily answered by reading the job description or the company website. Instead, ask about team culture, growth opportunities, or recent projects the company is working on.

10. Follow Up with a Thank-You

After the interview, be sure to send a thank-you note. A brief, polite email thanking the interviewer for their time and reiterating your interest in the role goes a long way. It’s a simple yet effective way to stay top of mind and show your appreciation.
