With the increased need for students to be taught in an online setting, we’ve put together a few tips to help you succeed at teaching online.

It’s important to get familiar with the platform you will be using for your online lesson. Make sure you are aware of the different ways you can interact with your students. For example, does it have a chat function? If so, this could offer another way to collect responses to a question you ask the class.
Send your students clear instructions on how and when they should join the class. If you require them to have a camera and microphone for the class, let them know well ahead of the lesson so they can make sure they have the right device available.
With face-to-face teaching, it’s easy to make your lesson interactive. But online, it can be more difficult because if multiple people talk, it can distort the sound. To overcome this, you can simply ask your students to raise their hand if they know the answer, and then they can turn their microphone on to answer. Or, you could use the chat function to get all your students responses. Alternatively, you could get your students to hold up cards with ‘true’ or ‘false’ on them.
This mode of learning will not suit every student, so it’s worth organising follow up 1-2-1 calls or even just telephone calls, so you can help those students who are struggling with online learning.
One of the benefits of teaching online is that many of the platforms used to teach on can record your session. This is great to circulate to your students so they can go over anything they weren’t sure about, or use it later for revision purposes.
