Questions to ask yourself before moving jobs.

Changing jobs is part of every career these days and having different schools and colleges on your resume isn’t a bad thing anymore; it’s becoming the norm. Nevertheless, it’s a big step, and therefore any move should be well thought through.

Moving jobs can offer you new opportunities and prospects. There are lots of reasons for wanting a change of scenery, from job insecurity to work stress, from an unhappy work environment to professional development. If you feel stuck in your current role, ask yourself a couple of questions before moving jobs to establish why you want to change it in the first place, and what it is that you’re looking for.

1. Why do you want to change your job?

Start by reviewing your current role and make a note of any potential weaknesses or areas that need to improve. Take the time to identify problems and ask yourself if you are satisfied with your responsibilities and work environment. Think about what it is you want to change, are you looking for more autonomy and greater responsibility; perhaps career progression is your ultimate goal.

2. What is it that you’re looking for?

You’ll need to decide what it is you’re looking for in your next role. What do you like and dislike about your current role is a good place to start. This should help you decide if you’re looking for the same position but in a different school, or if you want a promotion and more responsibility, or if you actually want to change your career completely. Give yourself plenty of time to reflect on different options before making any decisions.

3. Have you done all the research?

Make time to conduct proper research. Find out what other schools and colleges have to offer. Review their websites, social media channels, and recent Ofsted reports – consider if you have the skills to assist in areas which are needing improvement. If you have a chance, speak to someone from your network who works there, or knows someone who does, and can share their honest opinion about it.

When searching for a new position, read the requirements for the role carefully; make note of any set of skills and experience needed. If you’re missing any of the required skills or experience look into how you can gain the necessary skills before you make an application.

4. Have you scheduled time in your diary?

Many teachers already feel so busy that they struggle to find time to watch a movie or even meet a friend for coffee. Imagine when it comes to looking for a job! Finding a new job while still in employment requires greater organisation, focus and commitment. Be sure to reserve the time needed to start your search and prepare your applications.

5. Are you ready to start looking?

Are you mentally ready to make a change? Do you know where to start? Make yourself a cup of tea, take a seat and evaluate your skills, update your resume to include any new skills you’ve acquired or additional extracurricular activities you’ve organised, then get searching!
